Payments in Peru: the transition to digital

The digitization of the payment methods in Peru has been one of their most significant developments of the last few years. Indeed, the use of payment technologies, modern not only is changing the way in which the peruvians consume, but it also is democratizing access to financial services, especially to small and medium-sized enterprises (smes), which represent a fundamental pillar in the economy of the country.

Historically, but also today, the cash has been the predominant method in Peru. Despite the great efforts of the different actors in the market, there is still room for improvement in the indicators of banking and formalization in the market. The scanning, as a process which has been accelerating in recent years, has begun to change this picture. The convergence with other technological advances, such as the access to the internet and the spread of smart mobile devices such as phones and tablets, and they are allowing, in the last 2 years, the number of digital transactions per capita has doubled with respect to the previous years. This result has been driven in large part by the rise of digital wallets, which, in addition to traditional payments with credit and debit cards complement the product offering for transactional that the whole population can access the platform of digital payments market.

Studies of experts agree on the value generated by the acceptance of digital payments at small shops. The formalization of their business derived from the history of transactional information for later access financing on terms that are more favorable and run its growth projects, it is perhaps the most relevant. So, then, the digital payments play a role in implicit economic development and generation of social welfare.
